The Rise of Short-Form Video Platforms and the Transformation of Film Reception Among French Audiences in the 2020s (112702)

This study examines how short-form video platforms are reconfiguring film reception among French audiences in the 2020s. The rationale for the project lies in the tension between France’s historically institutionalized cinephile culture, shaped by theatrical exhibition, film criticism, and cultural mediation, and the rise of platform-based viewing practices driven by TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and related formats. Methodologically, the study uses a PRISMA-informed systematic review. Five hundred records were identified through semantic and Boolean searches in Scopus and Google Scholar; after screening for relevance to French audiences, post-2020 data, short-form video platforms, and empirical engagement with film reception or spectatorship, 68 studies were included in the final synthesis. The results show a shift from sustained, institutionally mediated spectatorship toward fragmented, algorithmically curated, and participatory modes of engagement, including recaps, reaction videos, mash-ups, memes, and platform recommendations. The study contributes to film and media studies by conceptualizing this shift as a structural transformation of cinematic reception, altering cultural authority, interpretive agency, attention practices, and the institutional ecology of cinema in the platform era.
